1. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

ÔI came here yesterday from my village,Õ he said. ÔWhy did you come?Õ I asked. ÔMy mother sent me to you with this letter.Õ ÔHow is your mother? I have not seen her for a long time. I hope she is quite well.Õ

Ans: He told me that he had come here the previous day from his village. I asked him why he had come. In reply, he said that his mother had sent him to me with that letter. I again asked him how his mother was and added that I had not seen her for a long time. I again said that I hoped she was quite well.

2. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

The traveler said to the peasant, ÔCan you tell me the way to the nearest inn?Õ The peasant said, ÔYes, I can. Do you want one in which you can spend the night?Õ The traveller said, ÔI do not wish to stay there, but I only want a meal.Õ

Ans : The traveler asked the peasant if he could tell him the way to the nearest inn. The peasant replied in the affirmative that he could. He then asked him if he wanted one in which he could spend the night. The traveler replied that he did not wish to stay there, but he only wanted a meal.

3. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

The father said to his daughter, ÔDo you know why I have sent you to school?Õ The daughter said, ÔYes I know. I have been sent to school to learn to read and write.Õ

Ans : The father asked his daughter if she knew why he had sent her to school. The daughter replied in the affirmative and said that she knew. She added that she had been sent to school to learn to read and write.

4. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

ÔWhy were you absent?Õ said the teacher. The head teacher is very angry with you. Go to him at onceÕ ÔI was seriously ill,Õ said Papia.

Ans : The teacher asked Papia why see had been absent. Then he told her that the head teacher was very angry with her. He advised her to go to him at once. Papia replied that she had been seriously ill.

5. Change the following passage into indirect speech: ÔPorter, you may go.Õ said the mistress of the house laughing. ÔYou have gained your freedom.Õ ÔBy Allah,Õ he replied, ÔI will not leave this house until I have heard the stories of my companions.Õ

Ans : The mistress of the house told the porter laughing that he might go. She also added that he had gained his freedom. Swearing by Allah, the porter replied that he would not leave that house until he had heard the stories of his companions.

6. Rewrite the following passage changing the form of speech:

Once I asked a sweet little girl, ÔWhat is your mother’s name?Õ She replied cleverly, ÔI know my mother’s name but I won’t tell you that.Õ I said, ÔWhat a clever girl you are!Õ I don’t tell my mother’s name to anybody whom I don’t know,Õ she spoke with an air of confidence.

Ans : Once I asked a sweet little girl what her mother’s name was. In reply, she cleverly told me that she knew her mother’s name but she would not tell me that. At this, I exclaimed with wonder that she was a very clever girl. Then with an air of confidence, she told me that she did not tell her mother’s name to anybody whom she did not know.

7. Rewrite the following passage changing the form of speech:

ÔGive me a few grains of corn. I am dying of hunger,Õ said the Grasshopper. ÔBut what did you do in the summer?Õ Didn’t you store up any corn?Õ asked the ant. ÔNo, I was too busy in singing.Õ

Ans : The Grasshopper requested the Ant to give him a few grains of corn. He added that he was dying of hunger. Being shocked the Ant asked him what he had done in the summer. He further asked if he hadn’t stored up any corn. The grasshopper replied in the negative and said that he had been too busy in singing.

8. Rewrite the following passage changing the form of speech: ÔI have just one word to say to you,Õ said the dealer. ÔEither make your purchase, or walk out of my shop.Õ ÔThank you,Õ said the customer. ÔI’m leaving your shop.Õ

Ans : The dealer told the customer that he had just one word to say to him. He told him to either make his purchase, or walk out of his shop. At this, the customer thanked the dealer and said that he was leaving his shop.
