16. Change the following passage into indirect speech: ÔWhat is a puppet show?Õ Sabu asked his father. Let’s go inside you can see for yourself.Õ Inside the tent Sabu said, ÔHow strange! A doll is dancing and talking!Õ Father said, A man behind the screen is moving the doll.

Ans : Sabu asked his father what a puppet show was. Then his father proposed to Sabu that they might go inside and then he could see for himself. Inside the tent Sabu exclaimed that it was very strange as a doll was dancing and talking. Father said that a man behind the screen was moving the doll.

17. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

ÔHave you killed the rats?Õ said the Mayor. ÔYes, I have,Õ said the Piper. Give me the promised money.Ô ÔHow funny you are!Õ said the Mayor, ÔWe cannot give you so much money. Take only fifty.Õ

Ans : The Mayor asked the Piper if he had killed the rats. The Piper replied in the affirmative and said that he had killed them. Then he requested the Mayor to give him the promised money. At this, the Mayor exclaimed with wonder that he was very funny and told him that they could not give him so much money and finally offered him to take only fifty.

18. Change the following passage into indirect speech:

ÔHave you prepared your lesson?Õ ÔYes sir, I have.Õ I said, ÔThank you, I like your sincerity.Õ my teacher said to me.

Ans : My teacher asked me if I had prepared my lesson. I respectfully replied in the affirmative that I had. At this my teacher thanked me and said that he liked my sincerity.

19. Change the following passage into indirect speech: ÔHave you taken your meal, Tania?Õ said the mother. ÔYes, I have taken my meal.Õ replied Tania. ÔWill you eat any fruit? Eat some mangoesÕ, the mother said.

Ans : The mother asked Tania if she had taken her meal. Tania replied in the affirmative that she had taken her meal. The mother again asked Tania if she would eat any fruit and also advised her to eat some mangoes.

20. Change the following passage into indirect speech: ÔMy sons, a great treasure lies hidden in the land there. I am going to leave it as I shall die soon,Õ said the old father. Being curious, the son said, ÔHow shall we find it?Õ ÔYou must dig the land for it, said the old man.

Ans : The old farmer affectionately told his sons that a great treasure lay hidden in the land there. He also told them that he was going to leave that as he would die soon. Being curious, the son asked him how they would find that. The old man replied that they had to dig the land for it.
