The umbrella is an old idea. It has not changed much over time. Old sculpture (art made with clay) from the Middle East, shows the king with an umbrella. Only royalty had them. More than 2000 years ago, fashionable women carried umbrellas in ancient Greece. In china, only royalty used umbrellas. In old Chinese books, there are illustrations of umbrellas. The umbrellas in old Chinese books look a lot like today’s umbrellas. There is not much information about umbrellas in Europe in the middle Ages. People probably used their coats to protect themselves from the rain. People in the South Pacific used umbrellas made of palm leaves to protect themselves from the sun and the rain. There have been many improvements to umbrellas. Now modern umbrellas are better than the old umbrellas. The old umbrellas were often made of oiled silk. Modern umbrellas are made of cotton or plastic. Old umbrellas had ribbing made of wood. Modern umbrellas have still ribs. Also, the trunk of the modern umbrella extends like a telescope. It can collapse and become shorter or extend and become longer.

The moon is the earths’ nearest neighbor. When the moon is full, it looks very attractive. So, man has always dreamt of setting foot on it. The dream came true on July 20, 1969. Three American astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins, set out for the moon in a spaceship. They traveled at a great speed. Just 76 hours later, they were orbiting the moon. After a while two of the astronauts, Armstrong and Aldrin, left their spaceship in a lunar landing craft and prepared to land on the moon. Armstrong was the first to climb out and set down. As his left foot touched the rough surface of the moon, he said, ÔThat’s a small step for a man, one great leap for mankind.Õ Just after twenty minutes, Aldrin followed Armstrong and stepped on the moon. Both astronauts explored the area surrounding the landing craft. Then they took pictures, set up scientific equipment and collected sixty pounds of rocks and moon soil. They also set up a television camera on the moon so that the whole world could watch. While they were busy with these activities, Michael Collins was in the main ship moving around the moon.
